Dubai Again

After I left Dubai in 2011, I had a wish to visit the city again. The city is really intoxicating to tourist like me who is visiting it for the first time. One would like to visit the city again and again. What a city, you have the world’s tallest building, tallest hotel, largest shopping mall, biggest aquarium, biggest airport and so many other eye catching wonders spread throughout the city. The place is real paradise on earth. The first time I went to Dubai, my friend Nirlipta Raychoudhuri (Kismis) did not leave me for a minute, like a big bro he took me to all the places in his car. So I could smell the place but, could not really taste it. This time I went there to attend the UAE Cancer Congress 2013 held at the world’s tallest hotel i.e. JW Marriott Marquis. From the day one I went around the city alone, Asanta boudi guide me how to negotiate the Dubai metro. Once I got familiar with the metro I could real enjoy and taste the place. I spend a lot of time in Dubai mall and also saw the world famous dancing fountain that I missed last time due to lack of time. Dr. Hina and her sister Fatima also came from India to attend the cancer conference; we had a great time together. Dr. Hina was staying with her cousin Arif Bhai in Ajman. After I came to Ethiopia going to conferences have virtually stopped. Here in Ethiopia expatriate staffs are not much involved or invited in any local conferences. So it was nice to be attending an international conference after a long time. The Cancer Congress was primarily for the conventional clinicians & oncologists and not much room was there for scientists; however we enjoyed the ambiance of the hotel JW Marriott Marquis. I was lucky to visit Dubai at this time of the year, as it was the time for the Gulf Information Technology Exhibition (GITEX). My friend Eric requested me to bring a good camera for him from Dubai, so I visited GITEX for the purchase. What an exhibition, it is supposed to be one of the world best as far as electronics items are concerned. All the latest electronics gadgets were on display in 2-3 massive halls. I came to know that tourists all over the world come to Dubai to make purchase from GITEX. I purchased the latest D3200 Nikon for my friend. It was great experience to go around the full exhibition area. I also visited other shopping malls to purchase petty items. This time I could meet my old colleague from SBS Postgraduate Institute of Biomedical Sciences, Dehradun Dr. Naushad Rais and his friend Dr. Arif Hussain both now working in Manipal University. The University is located quite far from the down town and to reach there I first travelled in metro and then in bus. The city bus services are just like in USA. Dubai is just like any other USA city, every thing here is well planned, organized and maintained, but the major difference is that you can talk in Hindi and have native Indian food, also there are many Hindi FM channels playing latest Hindi songs throughout the day. As majority of the work force population of the city comes from India, Pakistan or Bangladesh, you sometimes feel that you are in your home country.  I wished that we had a Dubai like city in India. However, there is a darker side of Dubai, because of the global financial melt down the growth of the city has slowed down considerably. According to the economist, financially there could more trouble time ahead.
